Great British Bake Off star Henry Bird has graduated from Durham University, sharing his success on social media.

He became a fan favourite on Bake Off for his smart sense of style, often donning waistcoats and ties in the tent.

However he had done away with the garment in the lovely snap he shared on Twitter and Instagram of himself popping champagne against a scenic backdrop to toast the end of an era.

‘Durham, you magnificent place. Through strikes, pandemics, and televised baking competitions, you’ve really been quite wonderful. Here’s to the next steps,’ he said.

Some of his fellow Bake Off stars sent message of congratulations, with Michael Chakraverty posting cheekily: ‘What a picturesque place to pop your cork.’

Rosie Brandreth said: ‘Congrats Henry’ adding three emoji of champagne flutes.

Michelle Evans-Fecci, who was also on Bake Off in 2019, said: ‘Huge congrats Henry’ with Nancy Birtwhistle posting: ‘Congratulations Henry – enjoy the life chapters that follow.’

Another 2019 alumni Alice Fevronia commented: ‘The best place’ with baker Ruby Bhogal writing: ‘Huge congrats (on not hitting anyone w that cork)!’.

Henry was a contestant on Bake Off in 2019, the youngest competitor in the tent at the time.

There was major upset two years ago when he missed out on a place in the semi-final, but his fellow contestants paid tribute to him in the following episode by deciding to sport ties.

The young baker also had a taste of the celebrity side of things during his time on the Channel 4 show as he was forced to deny rumours he was dating Michael, as well as Alice.

The Bake Off star rubbished the speculation in a piece for The Times, where he worked as an intern after taking part on the show.

Henry said: ‘Bake Off has always thrived on people helping each other, but this year I think it truly became clear how close we all got when several tabloid reports claimed that Alice and I were in a relationship based on the photos we had been in together.

‘This was news to me and to Alice’s boyfriend. These reports were swiftly followed by stories claiming that Michael and I were an item, based on a photo of us hugging. If a lingering hug is the qualifier for a relationship, then I dread to think what everyone thought of my farewell to [former host] Sandi [Toksvig]!’

However he added that he had become very close to the pair, travelling to France with Alice and to Wales with Michael to visit Michelle.
