Ed Sheeran’s new artist Maisie Peters has said she’s ‘flattered’ the singer chose to mentor her and admitted being associated with him has, inevitably, opened doors.

It was announced last month that Bad Habits singer Ed had signed Maisie as one of the first artists under his Gingerbread Man Records label, which launched in 2015.

She’s since been lucky enough to build a close working relationship with the chart-topping singer, who has co-written her new single Psycho.

‘We wrote it as the last song for the album, Steve Mac got on it and it was danceable and super fun. It was super quick, we wrote it in half an hour,’ Maisie told Metro.co.uk

Most would be star-struck by Ed’s global success but Maisie takes it in her stride.

‘I don’t [feel pressure] because I think I put myself under a lot of pressure anyway,’ she said.

‘Working with Ed has been amazing and the whole team has been amazing and I feel the same amount of pressure that I always have. I work really hard and would love to see the work that I love do really well but also I’m aware that it’s all about the journey.’

‘It’s been amazing to work with him and become friends with him. We’ve been in the same circles for a while as he’s signed to Atlantic, we’ve always been around each other,’ she added.

Maisie, 21, visited Ed’s Suffolk estate last year where ‘they got to know each other’ and developed a ‘really natural and easy’ relationship.

‘I’m definitely flattered and it’s amazing that he does believe in me so much,’ she said.

On the opportunities and exposure she’s gained from Ed backing her, the John Hughes singer admitted: ‘Yeah definitely. I feel it’s really invaluable that someone like that is so respected and so liked and appreciated by people and when they only have good things to say about you that can only mean a good thing.

‘It’s very educational working with Ed, he’s such a powerhouse artist and he’s so talented. He really does work so quickly and you have to run to keep up but luckily I work so quickly too so I was able to stay afloat.

‘He’s really good at listening to you and working out what would make sense for you. It’s been amazing and I’ve definitely learnt a lot.’

Maisie is set to release her debut album, You Signed Up For This, on August 27 and is described as Maisie’s coming of age story and a love letter to girlhood; penned with the wit, charm and quiet confidence that has seen her ascend from busking on the streets of Brighton.

She said of the album: ‘The title is from a lyric in the first song we wrote for the album opener. When I wrote it, the title was about the listener coming on the musical journey with me and suggesting that it’s very much what you signed up for.

‘It’s like a tongue-in-cheek statement of being well, for good or for bad, you just signed up for this.’
