Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut upgrade from PS4 to PS5 costs £9

No matter what version of the original you own, acquiring the PS5 Ghost Of Tsushima upgrade is going to cost you extra.

Shortly after it was leaked, Sony officially unveiled Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut. While it will be released for the PlayStation 4, it’s also another way for Sony to convince fans to jump the PlayStation 5.

It doesn’t have any extra content, but the PlayStation 5 version will boast a handful of unique features, such as 4K resolution targeting 60 frames per second, haptic feedback for the DualSense controller, and actual lip-syncing for the Japanese voiceovers.

However, what’s quickly become a point of contention is that anyone who owns the original game on PlayStation 4 will still need to pay money for it, as opposed to most other PlayStation 5 upgrades, which are given for free.

Let’s break down exactly how the upgrade path works, as explained by Sony itself:

If you own the original Ghost Of Tsushima on PlayStation 4, you can upgrade to the Director’s Cut version on PlayStation 4 for £15.99 (according to the UK PlayStation Store)If you own the original PlayStation 4 game, you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 Director’s Cut for $29.99 (or £24.99 according to Eurogamer).If you buy the Director’s Cut for the PlayStation 4, you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for $9.99 (supposedly £9 in the UK).

While the Director’s Cut does include new content (such as the Iki Island location and an additional story chapter) which could arguably justify needing to pay extra, the fact that Sony believes the PlayStation 5-only features are worth £9 hasn’t sat well with some people – at least judging by some of the responses on the PlayStation Blog announcement and Reddit.

It’s especially jarring when compared with Microsoft’s upgrade strategy. One of the big features of the Xbox Series X/S is its Smart Delivery System, where purchasing a game for the console also nets you the Xbox One version for free and vice versa.

Whether this fee will become standard in the future is impossible to tell until more cross-gen titles, such as Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, are released.

Smaller titles, such as Sackboy: A Big Adventure, haven’t required a fee though, so it’s definitely not for every game. Although either way, none of this seems to have hurt Sony’s sales.

Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut releases for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on August 20.
