Do Junior Wimbledon Championships Players and Champions Win Prize Money?

One of the most important events in sporting history is the Wimbledon Championships. It is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments that take place in a calendar year. Besides having the men’s and women’s categories, there are the juniors as well, which comprises of the boys and girls categories.

Interestingly, at the Wimbledon Championships and the rest of the three Majors held, players belonging to the junior section do not receive any prize money. It’s because the junior events in a Grand Slam are generally amateur. The reason behind this is so that juniors still have the option to maintain amateur status for college, the Olympics, or other competitions that mandate that status.

Juniors can qualify into the senior section at Wimbledon Championships

Nonetheless, juniors are eligible to win prize money by entering the Wimbledon Championships’ senior events. For that, they need to get into the draws either by wild card or by playing qualifying rounds. Also, in case they play senior events, they can also choose to decline the prize money in order to maintain amateur status.

Speaking about prize money, players have accepted to take a prize cut due to the effects of the global pandemic. This year at the Wimbledon Championships, the winners in singles will walk away with a prize money cheque of 1.7 million pounds, down from 2.35 million pounds in the previous edition of the tournament.

Besides, tennis is an expensive sport as compared to other sports. It involves the costs of various types of equipment. Players need a racquet, tennis balls, a court to play on, specialized shoes as a primary need.

Coming back to the juniors, players such as Roger Federer, Stefan Edberg, Bjorn Borg, and others have won the Wimbledon Juniors Championships. At the moment, the juniors have just begun competing at the All England Club. It will be interesting to see which of these athletes can win the title and make it big in this sport.
