“You Are Done”: John McEnroe Warns Andy Murray While Comparing Him with Novak Djokovic

One of the best sights of the 2021 Wimbledon Championship was watching Andy Murray on the court for the time first since his last injury. Overjoyed and overwhelmed, British fans couldn’t contain their excitement on Andy’s return, as it felt like a new beginning to re-writing the legacy of Sir Murray. However, backed by fans who cheered every swing and a miss, a tired Andy eventually bowed out of the tournament after his loss to Denis Shapovalov. This turned into the competition’s biggest upset so far, as the once joyful fans were now full of questions.

Former tennis legend and current BBC commentator, John McEnroe, believes the road ahead for Andy is tough, assuming there is one. Murray is limited by his injury, and John believes that he does not have what it takes to match the level of the current World No. 1 and dethrone him of his title.

“You need explosion. If you don’t have that, the way these guys hit it now, you are done,” he said.

“If you look at Novak, he is unbelievable”- John McEnroe

The now ‘Big 3’ were once called the ‘Big 4’, with Andy Murray often mentioned alongside the greats. Considered as Britain’s finest talent,  he was at his peak when disaster struck and injuries became his shadow. “It really depends on can the body take it. I am no doctor but if you have a metal hip, you are 34, there is a lot of wear and tear on that body,” Mcenroe said.

An Andy Murray comeback, making his way to the top, would be nothing less than a fairytale story. However, the top spot right now belongs to the Serbian G.O.A.T, Novak Djokovic. John Believes that the current World No. 1 definitely has the edge over the former World No. 1, with both playing in two different leagues.

“It is unlucky because if you look at Novak, he is unbelievable, they are a week apart in age,” Mcenroe said.

Fans are hopeful of a return from Andy Murray

Andy Murray looked phenomenal in his first two games at the 2021 Wimbledon Championship. He was fresh, lethal, and agile, and fans could tell he missed the court. And rightly so, because the court missed him too. However, his performance was so refreshing that fans almost forgot that Andy was coming on the back of a major injury.

Andy’s disappointing loss in the third round was a reminder of what injury does to even the greatest of players. The journey ahead might be steep and uphill. But with sheer grit and determination, Andy made a promising return to the court, and fans believe, he will do so, yet again.
