Loki episode 5 recap: Marvel fans ‘sobbing’ over heartwarming Mobius moment as Richard E Grant shines with glorious purpose

Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 5 of Loki.

After last week’s bombshell post-credits scene, episode 5 of Marvel series Loki on Disney Plus reveals where the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) has ended up after being pruned by the TVA (Time Variance Authority).

Having been greeted by Classic Loki (Richard E Grant), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), Boastful Loki (DeObia Oparei) and Alligator Loki, Loki learns that everything that is pruned by the TVA ends up in the Void, including TVA agent Mobius M Mobius (Owen Wilson).

Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), who is still at the TVA, manages to extract this information from Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), before pruning herself to be reunited with Loki and take down the TVA once and for all.

So who is really the person behind the curtain at the TVA, who’s been pulling the strings all along?

Mobius’ fate is revealed

In episode four of Loki, fans were devastated when Mobius was pruned by Ravonna after deciding to help Loki in his mission to bring down the TVA.

While it appeared that Mobius had been killed by his colleague, the mid-credits scene for the episode revealed that Loki – who was also subsequently pruned – had survived, landing in a wasteland and being greeted by several other Variant Lokis.

This means that Mobius would have also survived his pruning, a suspicion that proved accurate in episode five when he saved Sylvie from being swallowed up by the monstrous Alioth, turning up in a battered car with a decorative pizza slice on top.

After learning the truth about the TVA, that all of the people who work there are Variants and were stolen from their timelines by the organisation, Mobius tells Loki that he plans on ‘burning it to the ground’.

Just before Mobius heads back to the TVA using the TemPad brought by Sylvie, he and Loki share a hug, as the God of Mischief says: ‘Thank you my friend.’

Loki fans were overwhelmed with emotion over their heartfelt embrace, with one person tweeting: ‘This hug will forever be in my heart.’

Another person offered an analytical view of the scene, writing: ‘The way Loki considers it for a moment and decides that he may not have another chance, or another connection, like this again. He’ll never let a loved one go without a hug again.’

‘The fact that it was Loki the one who hugged Mobius first and not the other way around, I’m sobbing,’ someone else said.

Richard E Grant’s Classic Loki fulfils his glorious purpose

Last week, it was revealed that Richard was starring as another version of Loki in the Marvel series, a role it had long been suspected he would be playing.

What a crew (Picture: Marvel Studios/Disney Plus)

After taking Loki to their hideout with Kid Loki, Boastful Loki and Alligator Loki, Richard’s Classic Loki explains that in his timeline, he didn’t try to kill Thanos (Josh Brolin) as Loki did in Avengers: Infinity War, instead conjuring an illusion before isolating himself on a planet for years.

When Loki and Sylvie embark on their mission to enchant Alioth, Classic Loki, Kid Loki and Alligator Loki head off, preferring to survive rather than risk destruction.

However, just as it seems that Loki and Sylvie are on their own, struggling to enchant Alioth, Classic Loki fulfils his glorious purpose, conjuring up an illusion recreating the kingdom of Asgard that temporarily distracts the monster.

Numerous Marvel fans found the moment incredible to behold, praising Richard for his performance and Classic Loki for his monumental show of power that ultimately led to his demise.

Richard E. Grant was phenomenal as Classic Loki. He ate this episode up! I want to see more of his character like, a backstory or something. I need more Classic Loki. He knows a lot of magic than the 2012 Loki that we know. pic.twitter.com/aCgqUNRQKV

‘Classic Loki went out like a G. Dude was the most bada** and powerful Loki amongst the Variants. I hope Kid Loki and Gator Loki survived the storm,’ one person tweeted.

‘Why’d Classic Loki absolutely devour this scene,’ another said, while someone else wrote: ‘Ok maybe Classic Loki gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.’

Who is really behind the TVA?

The mystery as to who is really behind the TVA remains the biggest unanswered question in Loki, as the three Time-Keepers at the organisation’s headquarters were revealed to be androids.

After successfully enchanting Alioth, episode five ends with Loki and Sylvie walking towards a manor that could be where the person in charge of the TVA is hiding.

While their identity is yet to be revealed, one name that could float around ahead of next week’s finale is Kang the Conqueror, who’s to be portrayed by Jonathan Majors in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

In the Marvel comics, Kang the Conqueror is a time-travelling entity who is closely linked with Ravonna.

This could mean that Ravonna is pretending to not know that Kang is in charge, while secretly protecting his identity.

Will all be revealed in the Loki finale?

Loki returns next Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
