Angelique Kerber Makes Helpless Remarks After Ashleigh Barty Defeat at Wimbledon 2021 Semifinals

After a poor start to the season by her own sky-high standards, Angelique Kerber was back to her solid best in the grass court season. In the build-up to Wimbledon, Kerber grabbed a title at the Bad Homburg Open on her home soil. She also had a renewed spirit throughout the Championships, before eventually running into World No.1 Ashleigh Barty in the semifinal.

Kerber proud of her efforts

Kerber was expected to convert her brilliant run into glory, but it wasn’t meant to be. Analyzing her performance after the match, the 3-time Grand Slam winner Kerber was honest in her thoughts. She was as graceful as ever in defeat, and admitted that the better player won on the day.

“I tried everything. I put everything [I had] on court today. Ash is a great opponent. She deserved to win today. For me it was just, you know, the fight that I put the last few weeks in my tennis. That’s actually what counts for me right now.”

Regardless of the result on the day, it was a nostalgic return for Kerber from the fans’ point of view. The 3-time Grand Slam winner was back to her blistering best, hitting winners from all parts of the court. There were flashes of the rampant Kerber from the 2018 Wimbledon. Kerber was fast, accurate, determined, and found a way to dictate play on most occasions.

The 33-year-old overcame the likes of Soribbes Tormo, Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova on the road to the semis. Despite being ousted by the Australian, the German will be pleased with the level she produced, especially considering that she was knocked out in Round-1 of both the previous Slams this year.

If Angelique Kerber’s performance at the All England Championships this year is anything to go by, it is nowhere near the end of the road for the former No.1. Currently in the downhill phase of her illustrious career, Kerber will be hoping for a last dance in the majors. Is Angelique Kerber winning another Grand Slam a possibility? Or is it just a tad too late? Let us know.
