Capcom is celebrating another successful Resident Evil sequel, as Leon and Claire star in the CGI Netflix show Infinite Darkness.
You can tell by the fact that there are so few of them around nowadays, that survival horror doesn’t usually sell very well. But Resident Evil has always been the exception and Village has proven yet another hit.
Only released on May 7, Resident Evil Village has already sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide, according to a tweet from Capcom Japan. Which means 500,000 more sales since May.
That puts it on a trajectory to outsell Resident Evil 7’s 9 million total, although it’s unlikely to end up in the top three sellers of the series, which includes Resident Evil 4, 6, and 5. Although much of their success is due to how many different formats they’ve been released on.
Whatever the final number, the game seems to have been successful enough to ensure the continuation of the current first person trilogy, with the end of Village giving a clear hint as to the direction that Resident Evil 9 might take.
It’s far too early for Capcom to be talking about that yet though, as their current priority is the recently announced DLC for Village.
After that, there have been persistent rumours of a remake of Resident Evil 4, although those same rumours suggest it’s recently run into trouble. Although Capcom has also announced a VR version of the original game for Oculus Quest 2.

For Resident Evil fans desperate to fill the gap until the next game release there is another option, with Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness due to launch today on Netflix.
Although described as an anime, it’s an impressively realistic looking CGI series, set after Resident Evil 2 and starring Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
There are four episodes, all released at once, but it’s not to be confused with the Resident Evil live action show, that started filming this spring, or the new movie series that’s a little further out.
