Laurence Fox has said he took a ‘step too far’ in wishing the England team would crash out of the Euros in the first round after kneeling.

With the team now through to the finals, after a 2-1 triumph over Denmark on Wednesday night at Wembley, the actor-turned-politician has said while his earlier comments weren’t called for, he still didn’t support the team kneeling.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Laurence – who is the leader of the Reclaim Party – shared a lengthy thread in which he addressed the gesture, which is seen as a call for equality not just in sport but in all aspects of society.

‘Right. It’s hard to admit when you’ve made a mistake, but as I tell my kids it’s important to acknowledge it when you think you have. So here goes,’ Laurence began on social media. ‘I have always been behind England in any sport and any English team in any competition.’

He continued: ‘I think England is the most fantastic country on earth. We have done so much to promote equality in this nation that people long to come here and make the UK their home.

‘It was therefore disheartening to see the England football team kneeling for “equality”’

The White Lines star, who has long shared his dislike of taking the knee, said he felt the gesture was a ‘deep insult to those who work tirelessly for all the things we have achieved to become the genuinely inclusive, warm and welcoming society we are all part of’.

However, in sharing his earlier sentiment he admitted he crossed the line, as he apologised for ‘being a di*k’.

Laurence wrote: ‘But to say that I want England to lose just because of their kneeling, is a step too far. I should just have said what I felt about the kneeling and got on with supporting the team.

‘These are young men. Their intentions are no doubt noble, even if I continue to categorically disagree with what they are doing, saying I want them to lose doesn’t serve any purpose, especially at a time when national morale could do with a boost.

‘You can hate the kneeling and love the team, so that’s what I shall do.’

Saying he wants to see ‘politics taken out of football’, he wants fans to ‘go back to just enjoying the beautiful game’ that he insists ‘brings us together’.

Still, Laurence wasn’t done with slamming the gesture, hitting out at the idea of kids kneeling in the playground.

‘Do they know what they are kneeling for? I certainly don’t. It’s sad, pointless and divisive,’ he said, before getting back to his original statement. ‘But then again so is wishing your team to lose because they have bought into this rubbish. So there we go. I’m sorry for being a di*k.’

Last month, Laurence described the England footballers as ‘millionaire woke babies’, saying that he was ‘embarrassed to be British’, while in another he said that booing of those kneeling was ‘a beautiful thing to hear’.

He wrote: ‘I’m embarrassed to be British. I hope any team but ours wins in any future sporting endeavour. Tell me a single thing to moderate my thinking?

‘Millionaire woke babies protesting inequality on two hundred grand a week. We deserve everything that is coming.

‘Weak men. Weak.’

Laurence added of his wishes for England’s opponents: ‘My prayers are with Croatia, The Czech Republic and Scotland. Knock these woke English babies out.’
