Brundle Explains Why Mercedes Must Announce Hamilton’s Partner Russell at British GP

The Mercedes-George Russell is a never-ending saga, months of speculation of the British driver joining the Silver Arrows has been looming over the sport. Hence, former F1 driver turned commentator, Martin Brundle feels why the British GP is the perfect time to announce the potential all-English driver lineup.

With Lewis Hamilton putting pen to paper with the Brackley-based squad for the next two years; the team have been considering bringing Russell to the team as his deal at Williams ends at the end of the season.

Brundle feels the British GP is the ideal time to announce Russell to Mercedes

The 23-year-old is said to replace Valtteri Bottas next season and drive alongside Hamilton in the 2022 season. Furthermore, Brundle is confident that Russell will get the seat and why should the Silver Arrows announce the lineup at Silverstone.

He said, “It wouldn’t surprise me If George got the driver next year alongside Lewis at Mercedes next year, whether it be announced at Silverstone. If they’re going to do it why not would be the perfect place; It’s going to be a busy Silverstone, we have got the first of the sprint qualifying coming up as well. So we have got qualifying Friday, sprint qualifying Saturday, race Sunday.”

“Lots going on the massive crowd as you but you if you’re running Mercedes-Benz and you look at anything. Is Valtteri Bottas our man to win the championships when Lewis inevitably retires, two, three, four years into the future and you’d have to think, no I hate to say that I really admire Valtteri, I think he’s a great driver does an amazing job against the mighty of Lewis Hamilton.”

“But you can’t honestly say that If Lewis wasn’t there, Valtteri would be dominating instead can you. So I think Mercedes have to get a young gun in there that will emerge as their automatic new team leader sooner than later,” he concluded.

The time is ticking at the Silver Arrows for the second seat

Bottas’s contract with the 7-time constructor’s champions is expiring at the end of the season; coincidentally Russell’s time at Williams is also up at the end of 2021.

This gives the Brackley-based squad the perfect window, to grab the young Brit for next season. Russell certainly did impress the board room when he filled in for Hamilton as a one-off, last season the Sakhir GP.

Even though he didn’t win the race, he made himself a candidate for the seat sometime in the future. Now with that opportunity just around the corner, Russell is hoping to drive for the most dominating team on the grid from next year onwards.
