Death Stranding PS5 upgrade will cost you a tenner

Much like the Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut, the PS5 version of Death Stranding won’t be free for pre-existing players.

Last night’s State of Play didn’t have much in the way of brand new announcements, barring a couple of exceptions like a sequel to VR game Moss. But some already announced games received some new details, such as Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

First revealed during the Summer Game Fest last month, it’s very much what you’d expect: an enhanced re-release that takes advantage of the PlayStation 5’s hardware and comes with new content so those who bought the original game can justify double-dipping.

A post-presentation PlayStation Blog has gone into a bit more detail into what’s included, but it has also shared one pivotal piece of info that wasn’t mentioned during the State of Play: the upgrade for PlayStation 4 owners won’t be free.

If you own any version of Death Stranding on PlayStation 4, you still have to buy the Director’s Cut, albeit at a discount. The blog doesn’t list what the UK price will be but considering both the American and European prices are $10 and €10 respectively, it might be safe to assume that it will be £10 here.

It should be noted that the upgrade nets you the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game, which comes with even more extra content, like in-game suit colours and a digital art book. There appears to be no option to upgrade to the standard edition.

The idea of paying for a PlayStation 5 upgrade has become a topic of debate recently thanks to the recently announced Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut. While some argue that these sorts of upgrades should always be free, others say that the payment is justified as the PlayStation 5 versions do come with additional content not available on the PlayStation 4 versions.

Speaking of new content, Death Stranding Director’s Cut will include new story missions, new means of delivering goods, a firing range area to practice your gunplay, new combat techniques, and even a separate racing mode called Fragile Circuit.

The PlayStation Blog post states that all this content has been built from the ground up and will gradually be made available as you play through the game.

What’s more, the PC exclusive Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077 content will be included too and you can transfer your PlayStation 4 save data over to the Director’s Cut, so you won’t have to start over from scratch.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut releases for PlayStation 5 on September 24.
