Madonna has spoken out in defence of Britney Spears, calling her conservatorship a ‘violation of human rights’.

Britney, 39, has been under a conservatorship that controls her person and her finances for 13 years, with her father Jamie still in control of her finances.

In a bombshell testimony last month, the pop princess compared the conservatorship to abuse and asked for it to be ended without evaluation, claiming that she was not allowed to remove her IUD to have a baby or marry her boyfriend Sam Asghari.

Many stars including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake have spoken out in support of Britney, and the queen of pop is the latest to do so.

Madonna, 62, shared a picture of herself wearing a Britney t-shirt to her Instagram stories and wrote: ‘Give this woman her life back. Slavery was abolished so long ago!

‘Death to the greedy patriarchy that has been doing this to women for centuries, this is a violation of human rights!

Britney and Madonna collaborated on the 2003 track Me Against The Music, the same year as their iconic performance at the MTV Video Music Awards with Christina Aguilera.

Christina and Britney dressed as brides to sing Madge’s Like a Virgin before the star joined them on stage, culminating in Madonna sharing a kiss with both popstars.

However, it was her kiss with Britney which got the most attention, as after they locked lips, the camera panned to Britney’s less than impressed ex Justin, who was in the audience.

Britney’s testimony stunned fans as she said that she ‘cried every day’ due to the restrictions placed upon her life.

She said: ‘…I’ve lied and told the whole world “I’m OK and I’m happy.” It’s a lie. I thought I just maybe if I said that enough. Because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised. You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.’

The court has not yet responded to Britney’s direct testimony, but in response to earlier requests, a judge denied the motion to remove Jamie, 68, as his daughter’s co-conservator.

The filing to have her father removed from the conservatorship was made last November.

Jodi Montgomery, who is in charge of Britney’s person, is staying on as well, claiming that Britney ‘as recently as yesterday has asked Ms. Montgomery to continue to serve’; Britney had said Montgomery was ‘even taking it too far with me’ in her testimony.

In the past week, wealth management firm Bessemer Trust, which was a co-conservator of Britney’s finances along with Jamie, resigned from the conservatorship ‘due to changed circumstances’.

Britney’s lawyer Sam Ingham is also reportedly resigning, while her long-time manager Larry Rudolph announced his resignation after the Toxic singer voiced her intention to officially retire.

The next hearing in the conservatorship case is set for July 14.
