Ricky Gervais has thanked fans for paying his wages as he celebrated 20 years of The Office.

It’s hard to believe we were blessed with the sitcom, and David Brent’s outrageous ways, two decades ago today, with the comedy spawning the award-winning US version shortly after.

Commemorating the anniversary of the very first episode in true style, the co-creator and star shared a snap of himself in the bath.

A well earned relaxation session if you ask us…

‘Thanks for paying my wages for the last 20 years,’ the 60-year-old penned before listing the shows he has been working on.

‘#TheOffice #StandUp #Extras #Flanimals #GoldenGlobes #Derek #AfterLife #AbsolutelyMental and loads of other daft b******s.

Just to be clear, I did not say The Office would be cancelled if it were made today. That makes no sense. It’s still around. This is my actual quote. “Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I said, ‘Good, let them cancel it. I’ve been paid!’” Clearly a joke.

‘Best Fans in the world. Please feel free to use this photo as pornography as a “Thank You”.’

Noted.

Ricky’s post comes after he opened up about the success of the Office, which blessed us with comedy goal and quotes that are still referenced today.

It can’t just be us busting out David’s iconic dance at every chance we get?

Speaking to the BBC, he made a joke that the series, which ran for two seasons, would not be made today due to cancel culture.

‘I mean now it would be cancelled,’ he told the site.

‘I’m looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, “Good let them cancel it. I’ve been paid!”’

Co-star Stephen Merchant echoed his sentiment in a conversation with The Sydney Herald, adding: ‘There’s part of me that wonders, would it get made?

‘Would it get commissioned in the same way now, or would people be too jumpy?’
