Trayvon Bromell Loses First 100m Sprint Since 2019 at Diamond League Ahead of Tokyo Olympics 2021

The Monaco Diamond League 2021 is underway and everyone saw a stacked 100m field. Mostly all the top sprinters were in Monaco including Trayvon Bromell, Fred Kerley, and Akani Simbine. Bromell had established a brilliant run of form that propelled him to be the fastest 100m sprinter in the world right now. But he was defeated in Monaco by his countrymen, Ronnie Baker that ended his unbeaten run ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

Bromell was undefeated in 100m since July 2019. After not finishing at the 2019 Star Athletics Sprint Series in Florida, he had topped all the events since then, including the recent US Olympic trials. In Monaco, Bromell was far from his best time of 9.77 seconds. The American sprinter has the world-leading time but came fifth in Monaco with a time of 10.01 seconds.

Above Brommel were, Andre De Grasse, Marcell Jacobs, Akani Simbine, and Ronnie Baker. Baker won the race with a timing of 9.91 seconds. He had come second in the US Olympic trials with a timing of 9.88 seconds, just behind Bromell.

Thrilling 100m line-up expected at Tokyo Olympics 2021

Bromell has the world-leading time, and hence he is the prime candidate for gold however, Monaco Diamond League showed that anyone could take it among the top five. Akani Simbane also currently has the second-fastest time in 2021 and he has the African record. Similarly, de Grasse and Jacobs have timing well under the ten seconds mark.

Before his race, Bromell sat down for his press conference, and there he made the admission that the line-up in Monaco could be the final line-up at Tokyo Olympics 2021. And it looks like his judgment wasn’t wrong either after seeing the results. Bromell said: “This might be the finals of the Olympics anyway so it was crazy to see it.”

Bromell has seen a brilliant rise after coming from injuries. After his promising teenage years, Bromell had suffered multiple injuries and hence never got the chance to fulfill his potential. However, now he is back firing his best, and even got the nod from Usain Bolt for the gold in Tokyo.
