Triller Planning to Move Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jr. to Australia, Lopez Jr.’s Manager Threatens to Vacate IBF Strap

It seems the Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos Jr. bout is the most unfortunate boxing event of 2021. Earlier, this fight was set for June 5, but it later moved on to June 19. However, just days ahead of the event, the champ Lopez tested positive for Covid-19. Hence, the entire event got shifted to August 14 instead.

Despite this, the Lopez vs Kambosos Jr. event still seems in a tragic spot. Because, as per ESPN, the organizers of this bout, Triller, is looking to schedule this fight in Australia on an altogether new date in October 2021.

However, this move has infuriated Lopez and his team as they wish to fight in the US itself. Recently, ‘The Takeover’s manager, David McWater, gave his take on this entire fuss. He said, “That’s our major objection: to ask a guy to fly international and cut weight for 14 days while in quarantine. It’s not right.”

“One guy is at a distinct disadvantage.”

I don’t think we’ll have to give up the title. I think if they want to move [the fight] that far back the IBF will rule. But fine, if we have to, we’ll give up the title and he can fight [next-available contender] Isaac Cruz somewhere for $70,000 [for the vacant title].”

With McWater’s above comments, it’s clear that the Lopez vs Kambosos Jr. event is yet again in jeopardy.

The next few days will prove extremely vital for this contest as Teofimo Lopez and his team might arrive at one relevant conclusion.

Should Teofimo Lopez really vacate his belt?

Teofimo Lopez won his belts after pulling off a thriller against Vasyl Lomachenko in his last fight. He was eagerly looking to defend his titles and Kambosos Jr. came into his roadway as a mandatory challenger.

The Australian boxer is predominantly the IBF title challenger for Lopez. And now the latter and his team are thinking about vacating the IBF strap if this contest is staged Down Under.

Vacating a title will only put a dent on ‘The Takeover’s resume. He won’t be called the undisputed champ if he does so. That said, Lopez and his team should think about the same and arrive at one positive conclusion.
