The Open Championship is all set to begin from July 15 and the major championship is returning to the calendar after being canceled in 2020. The 149th Open Championship is organized amind plenty of concern and a lot of players have already withdrawn from participation due to various reasons.

The list is long and includes a few prominent names. The number of players who have dropped off from the field is 13. Here’s the list of players who have opted out of the final major championship of the year.

List of players missing The Open Championship

Former Open champion David Duval has also withdrawn from the event, but the organizers did not say why David withdrew. He won the Open Championship in 2001 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. John Catlin, who plays in the European Tour, will replace David in the field.

K.H. Lee has decided not to travel to England. He will miss the final majors of the year because of the birth of his child. Meanwhile, Lee had won his first PGA Tour event at the AT&T Byron Nelson in May. Antoine Rozner has been announced as his replacement for the tournament.

Matthew Wolff, even though, has withdrawn from the prestigious event, the 22-year-old hasn’t provided a reason for his withdrawal. Wolff did not play on the Tour for a few months between the Masters and the U.S. Open. He stayed away from the game to focus on his mental health. Andy Sullivan of England will replace him in the field.

Sungjae Im and Si-Woo-Kim have also opted to skip the Open Championship to focus on the Olympic tournament happening later this month. A medal in the Olympic tournament would exempt both these South Korean players from mandatory Korean military service.

Another American golfer, Kevin Na, has opted to not make the trip to the UK for The Open Championship. He made this decision due to the travel restrictions imposed by the UK and authorities.

Hideki Matsuyama was the latest to join the list of withdrawn players. The 2021 Masters Champion tested positive for COVID-19 and continued to produce the same results even after losing all of the symptoms. So citing all the traveling issues to England, Hideki decided to skip this event. He is, however, hopeful of making it to the Olympics in his home country.

The 149th edition of The Open Championship, the original major in golf, will take place from July 15-18 at St. George’s in Sandwich, Kent, England.
