The stars of Love Island 2021 were given a rare treat as they were allowed to watch England take on Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Islanders are not usually allowed to watch television during their time on the show, but this year’s cohort were allowed to watch the historic game as England competed in their first Euros men’s final in 55 years.

Laura Whitmore announced the news on Sunday’s Love Island Aftersun, sharing footage of the Islanders being told they could watch the match.

Chloe Burrows received a text message from producers reading: ‘Islanders, tonight you will be able to watch the England football team play Italy in the final of the European Championship! #ItsComingHome’.

The lads were seen screaming and yelling ‘get in’, with Toby Aromolaran and Jake Cornish leaping into the pool with joy.

The happiness was somewhat short-lived, however, as Laura also revealed the moment the group watched the final penalty from Italy which sealed England’s fate.

All of the Islanders could be seen gathered around the television on tenterhooks as the final penalty was fired, before breaking down as Italy won and England were runners up.

Until Sunday, the singletons had no idea how well England had been doing in the competition, having been in Spain since before the start of the series on June 28 so they could self-isolate.

Sunday’s episode was also pushed back by an hour to 10pm to allow for the game, but still ended up overlapping as the game went to extra time and then penalties.

Those who had switched over were also left stressed as they had been expecting a recoupling after new bombshell Teddy Soares joined, with the boys choosing between the girls, but were left with a cliffhanger ending instead.

Love Island continues on Monday from 9pm on ITV2.
