Dan Walker has been trolled by racists simply for asking a government minister about Tyrone Mings’ take down of Priti Patel on BBC Breakfast.

During today’s programme, Dan asked MP Stephen Barclay if the Home Secretary was wrong to call taking the knee ‘gesture politics’.

Mrs. Patel has been widely criticised for saying she was ‘disgusted’ by the racist backlash aimed at footballers Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka after they missed penalties during England’s defat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final when she previously defended people booing players for taking the knee.

Below her statement, their teammate Mings replied: ‘You don’t get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism messages as “Gesture Politics” and then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against happens.’

And even raising the matter to Mr Barclay, Walker was subjected to abuse from viewers.

Exposing one of the messages he received on Twitter, the presenter wrote: ‘Interesting how simply asking the government questions on #BBCBreakfast about the @OfficialTM_3 tweet to @pritipatel has led to plenty of angry messages & emails. From those questioning why I seem to support ‘them’ (black footballers) to this tripe. We have a long way to go.’

The message Walker shared accused Mings of ‘misogynistic bullying of an Asian woman’, and the host of ‘defending abuse’.

The viewer said they wanted Walker to ‘suffer the worst pain imaginable’.

Boris Johnson has also come under fire for blasting racist trolls when he previously compared Muslim women to ‘letterboxes’.

Former footballer Gary Neville accused the prime minister of fuelling racism from the top.

Following the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night, Twitter removed more than 1,000 tweets and permanently suspended a number of accounts as the three aforementioned players were bombarded with vile messages, while a mural of Marcus was also defaced with racist messages.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
