The Crown stars Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin are to go up against each other in the ultimate game of thrones, as they’re both nominated in the same category at the 2021 Emmys.
On Tuesday July 13, the nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced by father and daughter duo Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Amid the various snubs, The Crown received a staggering 24 nominations, including nods for Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.
Olivia, who played Queen Elizabeth II for a second consecutive series, and Emma, who made her debut as Princess Diana, are both nominated in the category for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series.
They’re both up against tough competition, with The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss, In Treatment’s Uzo Aduba, Lovecraft Country’s Jurnee Smollett and Pose star Mj Rodriguez also up for the award.
While reacting to her nomination, Emma offered her congratulations to her ‘wonderful co-star and mentor’ Olivia, saying it was ‘an unbelievable honour to be nominated in this category’ with her and the ‘other wonderfully talented actors’.

‘This nomination only exists because of Josh and all my family on The Crown,’ Emma said.
‘Every part of my involvement in telling this story has felt like a dream I don’t want to wake up from – I’m so happy and so honoured by the recognition. Thank you!’
Peter Morgan, creator and writer for The Crown, said that those who are a part of the period drama are ‘all pinching ourselves that after four series, The Crown is still being embraced and enjoyed in this way’.
‘Behind the scenes, this show has an immense, dedicated and incredibly hardworking crew of world-class talent. So, these nominations are gratefully received in recognition of all their outstanding work which continues to inspire me every day,’ he said.
