Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir Singh was left in tears on Tuesday as she addressed the racist abuse Marcus Rashford received following the Euro 2020 final – and also discussed the racism experienced by her 8-year-old son.

Marcus was one of the players, alongside Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who were subjected to online abuse after missing penalties on Sunday night.

The footballer apologised for letting people down and vowed to come back stronger in an emotional open letter – and Susanna was one of the celebrities who rallied around the footballer after it was posted online last night.

This morning, Susanna and Ranvir spoke in moving terms about the message, and were both visibly emotional when discussing Marcus’s powerful letter.

They also spoke about the young boy who penned a heart-warming letter to Marcus. Dexter Rosier wrote to the footballer after being inspired by his campaign to secure free school meals for youngsters during the pandemic.

The nine-year-old said he hopes the Manchester United star ‘won’t be sad for long’, telling him he ‘will always be a hero’ in his eyes.

‘That’s England. Dexter is England,’ Ranvir replied, choking up after reading the letter.

‘And Marcus Rashford, and Tyrone Mings, and Jadon Sancho and Bukaya Saka and every single member of that England squad,’ said Susanna.

Richard, rather unhelpfully, added: ‘Now look here, Ranvir, you’ve got to read the news so dry your eyes.’

Ranvir went on to say: ‘The thing is, it goes to the heart of what we want for our children. My son, he’s talked about racism that he’s faced. He’s going to be nine… you think about it all the time.

‘You’re privileged if you don’t have to think about it, and the only time you have to think about it is when one of your heroes is suffering. That’s the definition of privilege.’

She added: ‘Andi [Peters] walks around with it all the time… You can’t shake it off if you’re in that position. All the time it’s there, and privilege is having the choice. We all have to think about it, regardless of what skin we walk in.’

Susanna also slammed Boris Johnson’s response to the social media users sending racist abuse to England players after the Euro 2020 final.

The Prime Minister spoke out after players were subjected to online abuse after missing penalties – but Susanna accused the tone and the sentiment of the message of not going far enough.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
