Ruby Rose found out she was ‘allergic to latex’ during Batwoman filming.

The 35-year-old actress stepped down from the role of Kate Kane and her titular alter ego in May 2020 after just one season of The CW show.

While there were a number of factors at play, including Ruby’s recovery from a back injury which required surgery, the actress admits that her costume also played a role in her decision.

Appearing on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, the Australian star said: ‘I did find out that I was allergic to latex… and unfortunately my mask is latex.

‘I was like, “I’m a little itchy!” And it was getting worse and worse, because as you get more contact with it, I guess you get more reactions.

‘I took [it] off at the end and my whole face was just hives.’

Not ideal.

Ruby had injured herself on set in 2019, leading to her requiring back surgery, and didn’t realise the full extent of her injuries until she began filming the movie The Doorman.

She told Entertainment Weekly: ‘Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. [Laughs] Being the lead in anything is tough. But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea.

‘Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film —  regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional — in whichever ways it’s taxing.’

She added, however, that the Covid-19 pandemic played a part, as filming for Batwoman was cut short.

Ruby said: ‘It wasn’t so much [the injury], especially because after we wrapped up we didn’t get to finish the real finale because of Covid.

‘You know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things. I respect them so much and they’ve been so respectful to me.’

After Ruby’s exit, Javicia Leslie took over as Batwoman, starring as new character, vigilante Ryan Wilder.

Meanwhile, Wallis Day was cast as Kate Kane, who returned to the show at the end of the season with a surgically altered appearance after the False Face Society crashed her plane.

The season two finale of Batwoman aired last month in the US.
