Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse is worried she won’t be able to see her parents in South Africa as rioting worsens.

Violence and unrest has erupted in parts of South Africa in the wake of former president Jacob Zuma handing himself in to police last week after being convicted of contempt of court. He had failed to attend an inquiry into corruption during his time in office, which he denies.

The professional dancer shared a worrying video on social media of a huge fire that had broken out as the situation continues.

She said on Twitter: ‘Imagine waking up to the realisation that your parents are still in [South Africa] you can’t see them, haven’t seen them for years and probably still won’t!’

In a longer post on Instagram she alerted her fans to the situation in her home country, saying: ‘South Africa is burning!’

Oti went on: ‘This is getting worse and worse – what is the solution to a 3rd world developing country who need to work to feed their children and themselves in a pandemic more specifically a national state of emergency – more lockdowns than poor people can afford without financial help?

‘Is there literally no one who can lead this country that people fought so hard to free? Not one person in a high position want to see their own country do well? Where are they? 😢 the poor shop owners trying to survive as well.’

She received an outpouring of support with her sister leaving crying emoji, as did her Strictly co-star Aljaz Skorjanec.

TV presenter Davina McCall replied ‘Oh no… Oti 💔I’m so sorry’ while Pussycat Dolls star Ashley Roberts said: ‘So sad’.

Former Strictly champion Ore Oduba wrote ‘Oh Oti’ with a broken heart emoji.

Zuma’s 15-month sentence sparked protests at the weekend, and the military has now been involved to help the police, according to the BBC.
