Tilda Swinton pranks Timothée Chalamet during standing ovation for The French Dispatch at Cannes

Wes Anderson’s latest film The French Dispatch premiered at Cannes Film Festival on Monday, but the event also gave us a delightful insight into the beginnings of a beautiful friendship between co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton.

As the film was rapturously received with a nine-minute standing ovation after the screening, cheeky Tilda, 60, took the opportunity to play a prank on 25-year-old Timothée.

The stars, who were both strikingly stylish, with Timothée in a silver metallic jacket and Tilda in a bold bubble gum pink and orange ensemble with green sleeves, were sat next to each other during the event.

But, as caught by Variety’s Executive Editor Ramin Setoodeh, who was in a separate press room receiving footage of the carefully-controlled star-studded screening, Tilda took the chance to play to the cameras during the film’s standing ovation.

Grabbing her seat-holder sheet, the Doctor Strange star quickly stuck it on Timothée’s back as he stood clapping. Initially interpreting her reaching behind as an invitation for a hug, Tilda then gave the game away by spinning the Little Women actor so his back was towards the camera for the amusement of onlookers.

Timothée speedily worked out what had happened and gamely played along, gesturing to the sign on his back to land his pal’s joke for the crowd.

The duo were also seen walking hand-in-hand to take their seats ahead of the film’s start, and Timothée rested his head on Tilda’s shoulder during the red carpet photo call outside, filling our hearts with joy.

Tilda has been a staple of Wes Anderson’s work, appearing in Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel and voicing Oracle in Isle of Dogs.

This is Timothée’s first spin with Wes, but we have a feeling his quirky vibe will do very well for the director.

The French Dispatch, which describes itself as a love letter to journalists, is based around an American newspaper’s offices in a fictional twentieth-century French city.

The cast is packed with talent, including Wes Anderson stalwarts Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Frances McDormand, as well as Benicio Del Toro, Elisabeth Moss and Léa Seydoux, who tested positive for Covid-19 and has had to pause her intended trip to the festival, where four of her films are showing.

The French Dispatch is set to be released in cinemas on October 22.
