Grand Designs is heading back to Channel 4 for a new series tonight, to give you more chances to gawp at amazing properties built from the ground up.

The Kevin McCloud fronted series began in 1999, and has produced over 200 episodes so far, as well as a string of spin-offs which have included series in Australia and New Zealand.

The show follows people who are building their dream homes – often with jaw-dropping and unusual results – with McCloud giving his thoughts on the builds once they are complete.

Obviously the participants play an important part in proceedings – but are they paid for their time?

Do the participants on Grand Designs get paid?

Although participants are not paid for taking part in Grand Designs, that doesn’t mean the show doesn’t offer some benefits.

It’s been reported that the homeowners receive some compensation in exchange for workmen having to be out of sight while Kevin is being filmed checking out the property.

However it’s not clear how much this is.

Let’s not forget, however, that being on the show could prove lucrative further down the line, should you decide to sell your dream property.

Examples include The Curve, a house which featured on the show in 2007 – that cost £1.8m to build, and went on the market in 2020 for an impressive £3.4m.

Another property, made from a converted castle, cost £915,000 to build when it featured on the show in 2007 and 2009, only to go on the market for £1.6m in 2016.

When is Grand Designs on?

The series airs on Channel 4 on Wednesday nights at 9pm.
