It’s one of the most outlandish movie series in the history of Hollywood, but just how realistic is Sharknado? Tara Reid is on a mission to find out.

It’s been announced that Tara and co-star Ian Ziering are set to host a new programme exploring the feasibility of some of the cult franchise’s biggest moments.

The Real Sharknado will see the pair, known for playing main characters April Wexler and Fin Shepard respectively, examine how likely sharks really are to jump out of water to eat prey and even fly around in a tornado.

The new documentary will be broadcast as part of Discovery’s annual Shark Week in the US.

Ian, who also starred in Beverly Hills 90210, said he was initially apprehensive about getting into the water to test out some of the show’s most memorable moments for real.

He told Entertainment Tonight: ‘They put bait fish above our heads just to prove that sharks are not going to jump out of the water. You know, at first, I was a little hesitant to do that but Tara and I had a great time.’

When asked just how unrealistic the events of the films are, he said: ‘It’s not likely to happen. Sharks don’t really jump out of the water to eat in a storm [or] in a tornado. They really submerge. They stay away from the surface.’

Since the 2013 disaster movie first hit our screens, there have been five more movies in the franchise: Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming and The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time.

Actor Ian said he was initially reluctant to sign on for the later films.

‘Oh yeah I didn’t wanna do it,’ he said. ‘But I had to do it for my family. [And now], it’s six movies later! The glory’s gonna last forever.’

A possible UK release date for The Real Sharknado has yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, actress Tara recently spoke about another one of her hit films, teasing that another American Pie could be on the cards.
