US TV presenter Catt Sadler has implored her fans not to become complacent as lockdown restrictions ease as she has been impacted by Covid-19 despite having both of her jabs.

The star, 46, revealed she’s been suffering ‘breakthrough’ symptoms, including a fever, throbbing head and congestion.

Although two doses of the vaccine provide a high level of immunity against Covid infection, a small number of people may still catch the virus. In most cases, the infection is likely to be less severe in those who have received two vaccines.

Sharing she was fully vaccinated but had still caught Covid-19, Catt warned her followers to remain vigilant.

She wrote alongside an image of herself in bed: ‘I’m telling you this so that you understand that the pandemic is very much NOT over. Delta is relentless and highly contagious and grabbed ahold of me even after getting vaccinated.

‘I was caring for someone who contracted Covid (although at the time we thought it was just the flu) – so I did come into close contact with the virus, but I wore a mask, and again I’m fully vaccinated. I assumed I would be fine. Well I’m not. I’m one of many breakthrough cases that we are seeing more of each and every day. They said “you shouldn’t have severe symptoms at least” – well, mine are not mild.

‘Two days of a fever now. Head throbbing. Extreme congestion. Even some weird puss coming out of my eye. Serious fatigue; no energy to even leave the bed. If you are not vaccinated and not wearing a mask, I assure you you don’t want to feel like this and not only are you bound to get sick eventually you’ll be spreading it to others (as in my case – I got this from someone who wasn’t vaccinated).’

Encouraging safety among her followers, she went on: ‘If you’re in crowds or indoors in public I highly recommend taking the extra precaution of wearing a mask…

‘Vaccines lessen the likelihood of hospitalization and death but you can still catch this thing. So continue to protect yourselves. I love you guys and I so appreciate my thoughtful friends and fam rn. [sic]’

Recent Public Health England figures suggest that those who have received one dose of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines will have around 50% protection against symptomatic illness caused by the Alpha variant first identified in Kent.

However, for the Delta variant, first reported in India, that figure drops to 30% for a single dose of AstraZeneca’s jab and 36% for Pfizer’s.

But two doses provide just short of full protection, with two Pfizer jabs offering 96% protection against hospitalisation for the Delta variant and 92% for AstraZeneca’s.

Though the jabs provide a high level of protection, the Government guidance reminds the public that ‘like all medicines, no vaccine is completely effective’ and urges people to continue practicing good hygiene and social distancing.
