‘The Driver Sucks’ – Bryson DeChambeau Living on ‘Razor’s Edge’ at The Open Championship 2021

Bryson DeChambeau had a disappointing start to the 149th Open Championship. And he looked frustrated at the end of the round, which was understandable. DeChambeau scored 71 and finished one over par for the day.

Bryson had a horrific day with the driver as he managed to hit only 4 out of 14 fairways and remained in the roughs and hay for most parts. The 2020 U.S. Open Championship heavily reflected on it during his post-round press conference after Round 1.

Bryson DeChambeau and his driver issues

Bryson DeChambeau addressed his frustration with the driver after the round and said: “With the driver right now, the driver sucks. It’s not a good face for me, and we’re still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mis-hits. I’m living on the razor’s edge like I’ve told people for a long time.”

And it is true as, since the start of the year, DeChambeau has been struggling with his driver’s face. He is trying to find a face that is more compatible with high speed. Bryson is trying to find a driver that will accept more miss-hits. But apparently, the project is still in progress.

Bryson DeChambeau missed the majority of the fairways in the first round of The Open Championship. And that is the primary reason for his struggle as more often than not, he had an approach shot out of the thick hay. But he tried to make a comeback by making three consecutive birdies on 12, 13, and 14. But sadly, DeChambeau dropped a shot again on the 15th and 17th to finish +1 for the day.

“It’s not the right design, unfortunately,” he said, “and we’ve been trying to fix it,” DeChambeau said when asked about his driver issues. And hopefully, he will sort it out as soon as possible. Bryson DeChambeau was seen practicing with the driver after the first round with his new caddie.
