‘Where I Need to Be Living’ – Jordan Spieth on Why He Thrives at the Open Championship

Jordan Spieth had a staggering start to the 2021 Open Championship. He scored 65 and remained five-under for the day. Spieth was exceptional with his irons and putter throughout the day. Although his driving accuracy was slightly off, it was decent enough to avoid the thick roughs.

Jordan Spieth has always had his share of luck in The Open Championship. He won this tournament in 2017 and will be hoping for the same this time around as well. Jordan seems at ease whenever he plays the Open Championship. And that is what he said in the post-round press conference.

In the post-round press conference, a reporter asked Spieth why he thrives in Open, and this is what he answered“There are a lot of external factors here—and external is where I need to be living.”

This means Spieth enjoys playing the golf course rather than swing. He has already previously mentioned that he is a ‘feel first’ player, and links golf course demands feel from every shot a player plays. In short, being external means seeing the shots and hitting them instead of becoming technical.

However, Spieth started poorly, as he dropped a shot on the 3rd hole. But he made a brilliant comeback and made consecutive four birdies from 5th to the 9th hole and remained -3 for the tournament. While on the back nine, he remained bogey-free and made two birdies to finish with a score of 65, cruising to -5 for the championship.

Jordan Spieth will tee off in the afternoon for the second round. He is finally getting back in his original form and is looking in complete sync with his game. The course demands accuracy, and that is what Spieth has delivered in the first round. He will be hoping to continue this momentum for the upcoming round and get into the weekend with full confidence.
