Damian Lewis was in high spirits as he returned to work on the set of Billions, four months after the death of his wife Helen McCrory.

The 50-year-old was pictured in London, where the sixth season of Sky’s Billions is in production, wearing a navy bomber jacket and a grey top.

The star, who plays hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod on the show, smiled in between takes as he chatted with masked-up crew members.

Also seen on location with Paul Giamatti, who plays United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades, while the actors were surrounded by extras dressed as New York City cops – signalling that the new season isn’t set in London, despite being filmed there.

Billions follows Axelrod as he accumulates wealth and power in the hedge fund industry, while Rhoades attempts to prosecute his illegal acts.

Its fifth season will resume airing this September after being suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Damian has starred on the show since its first season in 2016, and has received best actor nominations at the Satellite Awards for his role.

This is the British star’s first time back at work since the death of his wife Helen in April.

The Peaky Blinders actress died aged 52 after a private battle with cancer.

Damian, who had been married to Helen for 14 years, wrote in a statement: ‘I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.

‘She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives.

‘She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.’

Helen is survived by Damian and their two children, Manon, 14, and Gulliver, 13.

Homeland star Damian later shared that his wife had told him to have lots of girlfriends following her death.

In a moving tribute written for The Time, he said: ‘Only a couple of weeks ago she said to us from her bed, “I want Daddy to have girlfriends, lots of them, you must all love again, love isn’t possessive, but you know, Damian, try at least to get though the funeral without snogging someone.”’

He described her as ‘utterly heroic in her illness’ and spoke about her ‘bravery’ towards the end of her life.

The actor wrote: ‘She has shone more brightly in the last months than you would imagine even the brightest star could shine. In life, too, we had to rise to meet her.

‘But her greatest and most exquisite act of bravery and generosity has been to “normalise” her death. She’s shown no fear, no bitterness, no self-pity, only armed us with the courage to go on and insisted that no one be sad, because she is happy.

‘I’m staggered by her. She’s been a meteor in our life.’

Helen was best known for playing Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders and Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, as well as her performances in Skyfall, Quiz and MotherFatherSon.
