Team Great Britain’s Women’s Football Team Announces 3 Captains for Tokyo Olympics 2020

Team Great Britain will take part in the Olympic games for the third time in their history. Ahead of the tournament the team’s coach Hege Riise has announced three captains for the team. The team first participated in the event in the 2012 London Olympics. But an unsuccessful agreement between governing bodies of the four nations meant they couldn’t send a team to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But an agreement was reached for the 2020 Olympics. It was decided that the highest-ranked team at the time of the 2019 women’s world cup will get the chance to send a team to the event in Tokyo. England claimed the spot and has sent their team to the summer Olympics. But the decision to have three captains for the tournament is quite unique, to say the least.

Team GB will have three women’s football captains at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Steph Houghton, Sophie Ingle and Kim Little have been chosen by head coach Hege Riise, with each player set to captain games on rotation throughout the tournament.

The team’s Norwegian coach, Riise apprised the decision to have 3 captains for the event. “We are fortunate to have so many experienced and talented players in our squad and we think of ourselves as a ‘leaderful’ team, where every individual brings their own leadership strengths to the group,” he said.

However Steph, Sophie, and Kim will lead the way on the pitch. This is a very close group on and off the pitch and I have been so impressed how they have all come together,” Riise added further.

Who are the three captains of Team Great Britain at Tokyo Olympics 2020?

Steph Houghton, Kim Little, and Sophie Ingle will lead the team during the Tokyo Olympics 2020 event. Houghton has captained team England since 2014. She is a mainstay at the team’s defense and has also previously competed at the 2012 Olympics.

The Arsenal captain, Little is the vice-captain of her nation, Scotland. She is playing international Soccer for over 15 years and has won 140 caps for her country to date. Little was also a part of the 2012 Olympics as one of the non two English players on the team.

Wales captain, Ingle is the third lady selected to lead the team Great Britain at the Olympics. She plays for London outfit Chelsea and has been captaining the Wales national team since 2015. The 29-year-old is very well trusted by her manager too.

It will be interesting to see how the team performs at the Olympics. The chemistry of the team will be a deciding factor as there are players from multiple countries. So, unlike other nations, they will have to put in an extra effort to keep the bonding of the team good. But the message of unity from various players might just assure the fans that the team is on the right track and positive outcomes can be expected.
