Dan Walker admits he misses breakfast TV rival Piers Morgan: ‘It keeps you on your toes’

Dan Walker has confessed that he misses his competitive banter with ex-Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, saying that he ‘never shied away from a bit of competition’.

When Piers was a co-host on GMB, he and BBC Breakfast’s Dan would frequently be at loggerheads, mocking each other over everything from ratings to takes on current affairs.

While it may appear as though they get on better behind the scenes than they let on, having recently gone to the golf course together, they’re best known for their bickering, which Dan appears to be missing after Piers’ dramatic exit from GMB in March.

When asked about his rivalry with Piers, 56, Dan said: ‘We’re okay. I sometimes miss the back and forth – we had a little ding dong about Emma Radecanu on social media.’

Speaking to The Sun’s TV Mag, the 44-year-old continued: ‘Him just pontificating about how she should have acted and what was going on in her head, so I just asked him what he would have felt if she’d stormed off in a huff.’

Dan added that he ‘thought it was healthy for both programmes’, stating: ‘I never shied away from a bit of competition and it’s good, it keeps you on your toes as well.’

However, he said that he doesn’t ‘miss it too much’ as he reckons ‘we’ll see him back on a screen sometime soon’.

In Piers’ absence, several broadcasters have taken his spot presenting GMB alongside Susanna Reid before a permanent replacement is announced.

So could Dan be the man for the job? Not likely.

When asked if he would consider succeeding Piers, Dan answered: ‘I’m very happy doing what I’m doing!’

There have been heavy rumours over the past few months that Piers might end up joining Andrew Neil’s recently launched news channel GB News.

In early June, GB News chair Andrew shared that he was having ‘conversations’ with Piers, saying: ‘We’re in good discussions, we continue to stay in touch and he knows that we feel that he would be a great addition to the line-up.’

This week it was reported that some shows on the channel accumulated ‘zero viewers’ after a presenter took the knee live on air in support of the England men’s football team’s statement against racism.

It was later reported that the director of programming for the company had stepped down from his position.

BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One.
