Warning: spoilers ahead for Loki.
Kate Herron, the director of Loki on Disney Plus, has explained why a scene depicting ‘King Loki’ appeared to have been deleted from the first season of the mischievous MCU show on Disney Plus.
Earlier this week, the explosive episode 6 finale of Loki sent Marvel fans into a frenzy as they quickly started theorising how Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie’s (Sophia Di Martino) time-bending story may continue in season 2.
However, several questions were left unanswered, including the whereabouts of a scene shown in a trailer for the series.
In the scene in question, Loki is in the throne room of Asgard, lording over his subjects in a depiction of the character that fans referred to as King Loki, a future iteration of the God of Mischief who appears in the Marvel comics.
When the anti-hero adventure ended, fans were puzzled when the scene never occurred, as some drew the wrong conclusion that King Loki might turn out to be an evil variant of Loki in charge of the TVA.
In a new interview, director Kate outlined how the scene was originally supposed to appear at the start of the show when TVA agent Mobius M Mobius (Owen Wilson) is showing Loki a montage of his life.

They tended to lean a bit more into comedy, and the scenes weren’t bad. But when we were putting the edit together, they were quite near where [Loki] sees Frigga [dying],’ Kate told TVLine, referencing the part of the montage where Loki witnesses the death of his mother in Thor: The Dark World, played by Rene Russo.
‘Obviously, we didn’t want to take away from that moment, because it’s his mom dying and it’s very emotional. It’s always tricky,’ she said.
‘The scenes weren’t necessarily not good, but they weren’t quite sitting right. That’s why there’s sometimes bits that people see that don’t end up in the show.’
While Loki has been renewed for a second season, an announcement that was made in the finale post credits scene, Kate will not be helming the project going forward.
The director stated that she had always intended to film one season of the show, adding that ‘there’s no bad feelings’.

‘It’s a lot for one director to do six hours, particularly in the Marvel way. We didn’t have the showrunner system. We ran this like a giant film, which I’m forever grateful for and was a massive opportunity for me,’ she said.
‘But I threw so much at it, and it’s a lot. I’m so proud that I got to work on it. I felt like this was my bit for Loki’s story, and I hope I work with Marvel again in the future.’
Loki is available to watch on Disney Plus.
