Lewis Hamilton Hit With 2 Penalty Points For Causing Verstappen F1 Crash at British GP

It was a day of celebrations for the British fans, as their homeboy, Lewis Hamilton, delivered an incredible comeback to steal the win from Charles Leclerc at the very last moment. However, his win wasn’t as straightforward as it sounds, with a huge level of controversy surrounding the Briton.

On lap 1, Hamilton and his title rival, Max Verstappen, came together around the high-speed turn 9. What followed was a horrific crash for Verstappen, as the Dutchman watched himself skid his way into the tire barriers at blinding speed.

And after a long investigation, the stewards gave out a verdict that Hamilton will be burdened with a 10-second penalty for causing a collision. And now, following the race, the stewards have further awarded the Briton 2 penalty points on his super license.

What did the stewards state as the reason for Hamilton’s F1 penalty points?

The stewards released a statement stating that Hamilton will endure 2 penalty points. Why? Well, apparently, the stewards felt that the incident was avoidable, as the Briton had enough room to his right.

Moreover, when the crash took place, Hamilton wasn’t ahead of Verstappen to defend his racing line. “Cars 33 (Verstappen) and 44 (Hamilton) entered turn 9 with Car 33 in the lead and Car 44 slightly behind and on the inside.

“When Car 33 turned into the corner, Car 44 did not avoid contact and the left front of Car 44 contacted the right rear of Car 33. Car 44 is judged predominantly at fault.” 2/2 #F1 #BritishGP

Car 44 was on a line that did not reach the apex of the corner, with room available to the inside. When Car 33 turned into the corner, Car 44 did not avoid contact and the left front of Car 44 contacted the right rear of Car 33. Car 44 is judged predominantly at fault,” the statement read.

How many penalty points does Lewis Hamilton have now?

With this race weekend, Hamilton’s penalty point tally has gone up to 4. Lucky for the Briton, he off-loaded 4 penalty points ahead of this Grand Prix weekend.

Hamilton earned the penalty points back in 2020 at the Austrian Grand Prix for two different reasons. One for forcing Alex Albon off the track and the other for failing to slow under yellow flags.

Nevertheless, the 7-time world champion drove his heart to claim what looked like an unlikely race win at Silverstone. However, in doing so, the rivalry has finally reached a bitter state.

And there is no denying that Verstappen is going to come back at his rival over the upcoming race weekend in Hungary. So, will Hungaroring witness yet another Hamilton – Verstappen duel? Well, we’ll know soon enough.
