Amy Winehouse’s iconic beehive created ‘as a joke’

Amy Winehouse’s former pal and hairstylist has claimed that he created the singer’s iconic dramatic beehive hairstyle as a ‘joke’.
It comes as friends and family of the late star share memories and anecdotes ahead of the 10th anniversary of Winehouse’s death.
Alex Foden has long maintained he was responsible for creating the star’s legendary hairstyle for her Back to Black music video, released in April 2007, and although he says he intended for it to just be a bit of fun he has claimed everyone loved the look so much that it soon became her signature style.
In an interview with the Sunday People, he said: ‘As a joke, I backcombed her hair massively and put an extra packet of hair in.
‘I said, “There you go, let’s go and show the finished look”, taking the p*** obviously, and as we came out the trailer everybody went, “Oh my God! That is it, that is the signature look”.’
While Winehouse had been seen prior to the music video’s release with backcombed hair and an, albeit smaller, beehive, Alex said he would make Winehouse’s beehive bigger and bigger, so much so that she apparently once lost her mobile phone in her locks for ‘three days’.

He added: ‘She once couldn’t find her mobile for three days. She scratched her head and it was inside her beehive.’
The singer died on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27 and this month marks 10 years since her passing.
Despite her hit albums and Grammy Award wins, Foden insists the musician was ‘just a normal girl’ and a great friend, but she struggled with her drink and drug demons.
Similarly, Winehouse’s father Mitch – who has in the past slammed Alex for his involvement in an ‘exploitative’ documentary on the star – said he wants his daughter to be remembered for her talent and generosity.
He told The Sun: ‘Every year is difficult but of course 10 years on brings attention — which I understand but it brings it all back too. It’s hard to avoid being upset. In many ways we will never get over it, however long passes.
‘But shortly afterwards, we will head somewhere for a meal and our focus will be on the amazing things about Amy’s life — her talent, her generosity and the love she showed us all.

‘That’s become my mission, to make sure people think of Amy for all she gave the world and those around her, not just for her troubles with addiction.
‘Of course we remember the big career highs, the awards, but my favourite memories are the smaller, more personal moments we shared.’
