Countdown’s Anne Robinson was surprised when the cheeky anagram ‘megabitch’ popped up during today’s episode of the Channel 4 show.

Letters and numbers whiz Rachel Riley rearranged the board to display the word after comedian Rachel Parris, who is filling in for Susie Dent, noted the nine-letter corker over in Dictionary Corner.

‘I’m just checking it is a word, but yes, there’s a nine there with “megabitch”,’ Parris declared.

‘Really?’ a stunned Anne replied.

‘Yes,’ Parris insisted, prompting the audience to clap.

‘Gosh, that’s astonishing,’ Anne continued. ‘And it’s perfectly acceptable? You can say it in the afternoon?’

‘Sure,’ Parris continued. ‘It’s quite a good band name as well.’

The word bitch is outlined as ‘potentially unacceptable pre-watershed’ by television watchdog Ofcom.

Ofcom notes that if the word is used with more aggression or specific intent to hurt, then the impact is heightened.

The reveal came after Riley picked out the tiles ‘CBHEAIGTM’ during one of the rounds.

One contestant suggested the word ‘megabit’ before Parris dropped the nine-letter bonus points winner.

Viewers were in hysterics over the word’s appearance, with one describing the television moment as ‘quality’.

‘It feels like I’ve just witnessed something historic here,’ another penned.

The Weakest Link star Anne took over from Nick Hewer as the presenter of Countdown last month.

Before her debut on the show, Anne explained she that she has no time for ‘snowflakes’ and called out ‘unnecessary’ censorship.

More: Rachel Riley

‘Yes, there are too many snowflakes today,’ she told the Radio Times. ‘In the 1970s it was the tougher women who adapted to a male world.

‘Now, thankfully, clever women of all shapes and sizes are in the workplace, but it means they don’t have steel armour and are more easily upset.’

Countdown airs weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
