Eamonn Holmes reminded viewers that the Covid-19 vaccine doesn’t meant you cannot still contract the virus, even if you have been fully vaccinated.

More than 79 million vaccines have so far been administered across the UK, including almost 34 million second doses. Health experts and scientists have shared positive findings as the vaccine rollout continues, sharing that vaccinations have interrupted the link between infection and serious illness and death.

Although two doses of the vaccine provide a high level of immunity against Covid infection, a small number of people may still catch the virus.

On Monday’s This Morning broadcaster Julia Hartley-Brewer appeared as a guest to discuss what has been dubbed ‘Freedom Day’ as the few remaining pandemic restrictions are lifted in England.

She shared that she has not worn a face mask for the past month, and will continue not to wear a mask in shops or on public transport, claiming she is exempt because she finds mask wearing ‘severely distressing’ and ‘utterly pointless’.

Julia added that as she has had both doses of the vaccine and had previously contracted Covid-19 she does not pose a risk to anyone else.

She declared: ‘I don’t need protecting because I’ve already had Covid and I’m double jabbed, and I won’t risk anyone else because I’ve already had Covid, I’m double jabbed. I only had a PCR test yesterday on the way back from Majorca.’

When the segment ended Eamonn took a few moments to speak directly to viewers who may also be confused about lockdown guidelines and what to do for the best.

The host spoke about people who have been ‘affected very badly’ by Covid-19 or are suffering from long Covid, saying: ‘It’s up to us. It’s up to individual responsibility on this, but the idea that there is leadership on this that anybody actually knows…

‘I think politicians would be better off saying we don’t know what’s going to happen, stick with us, we may go left we may go right, we’ll react to whatever the virus is doing and stop trying to pretend everybody knows. Naming today Freedom Day because it certainly isn’t and it certainly won’t be for a long time I would have thought.

Co-host Ruth Langsford added: ‘Things change all the time, with things like travel.’

Eamonn went on: ‘I know people who have been double jabbed and they have Covid and they were saying to me, “You would not want to get this” so double jab is not going to prevent this happening.’

‘Not 100%’ Ruth said, ‘but it provides protection and it hopefully stops you getting very ill with it or dying, but it doesn’t stop you getting it or spreading it actually.’

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
