Nia DaCosta is in the thick of directing the upcoming blockbuster The Marvels, and describes it as ‘less traumatising’ than her previous releases.
The filmmaker will become the first Black woman to direct a Marvel movie with her work on the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris.
Nia’s currently shooting the anticipated movie in London and has revealed that it’s a welcome break from the harder scripts she’s worked with recently, notably the upcoming reboot of classic horror Candyman.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director said: ‘It’s a lot less traumatising to work on for sure. But this movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things. But no, it’s been nice to work in a different world for sure.’
She added: ‘It’s amazing. [It’s] more [freedom] than I’ve had on anything. It’s great because we’re all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie.’
The Marvels is expected to follow on from the events of Captain Marvel, which starred Brie in the titular role aka Carol Danvers.
It’ll be a while until fans can witness Nia’s work as The Marvels isn’t scheduled for release until 2022.

However, they can instead enjoy her upcoming project, Candyman, which will also star Teyonah.
Candyman (2021) is described as a ‘spiritual sequel’ that will see Tony Todd reprise his role as the titular boogeyman, alongside Vanessa Estelle Williams as Anne-Marie McCoy from the original 1992 movie.
Teasing the spin she’s put on the classic, Nia said: ‘[As a kid], I remember I was like, “Oh my God, the movie terrifying”. But, as an adult, I’m like, “Oh, that movie is not like terrifying so much as what it talks about is terrifying”.

‘It’s really chilling and like a weird idiosyncratic art movie.’
The filmmaker continued: ‘Revisiting it again and again to prepare for this movie, I [realised] I have a lot more latitude and don’t have to be confined to, “I just have to scare people”, because it’s about so much more than that.’
The Marvels is set for release on November 22, 2022, while Candyman will hit cinemas later this year.
