When the shots stop, the mother emerges from her sheltering place, begging other customers to help her injured child.

The baby is expected to survive the bullet injury.

One person has reportedly been arrested in connection with the shooting, although the motive remains unclear.

The owner of the Philadelphia convenience store where it happened, Majid Choudary, told ABC6 that she couldn’t sleep after witnessing the disturbing scene.

“The day when that happened, that night I couldn’t even sleep because my mind was still hearing that voice.”

Choudary added that she can still see bullet holes in the store, and she is scared for her safety.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner mentioned the shooting while speaking about the recent surge in gun violence in the city at an event Monday.

He said: “An approximately one-year-old child was shot one time. I think we’re all impacted by the injustice of children suffering wounds.”

SHOOTINGS SURGE

The one-year-old is just one of a staggering 123 children shot and 21 killed in Philadelphia this year.

John McNesby, the president of a lodge within the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, told ABC6 of local police efforts to get guns off the street.

“They’re out there doing their job under very trying circumstances, risking their lives, protecting themselves and the community with bringing guns off the street.”
