Sexy Beasts: Who creates the costumes for Netflix’s wild dating show?

At first glance, new Netflix dating series Sexy Beasts looks like the stuff of nightmares, with singletons dressed as an assortment of creatures, from a furry mouse to a bug-eyed insect.
Behind the scenes, each costume was meticulously created by a team that’s used to working on high end entertainment productions.
A lot of thought went into the creation of each and every look, with several of the animalistic disguises sadly ending up on the cutting room floor.
The creation of the costumes wasn’t just about looking the part – they also had to be practical, as the daters took part in extremely physical activities, from axe throwing to clay pigeon shooting.
So who is the costume designer behind the beastly creations?

The costumes for Sexy Beasts are devised and produced by Kristyan Mallett, a make-up effects specialist for film and TV who owns the company KM Effects.

Kristyan has previously worked on productions including Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Theory of Everything and Patrick Melrose, with KM Effects also being involved with the Harry Potter franchise and Black Mirror.
Kristyan, who also worked on the original series of Sexy Beasts when it launched on the BBC in 2014, told Newsweek that there were 48 characters in total, for seasons one and two, which required the use of 144 sets of prosthetics.
‘Now these prosthetics would include a full back of head, face, cheek. The idea was, we had to completely hide their face and, with prosthetics, less is more normally for us,’ the designer said.
‘We figured we’d do everything with foam latex because you can stretch it more. It doesn’t look as great as silicone, which we usually use, on camera but it works for this because it’s light entertainment.’
Kristyan explained that it was a challenge figuring out how each singleton would pull off their costume, as if someone sweated profusely, their prosthetics might ‘fall off’.
They had to ensure there was ‘extra glue’ for the costumes when daters went on the rollercoaster, while the team also had to do a ‘risk assessment’ with the theme park in case of an emergency, if someone required CPR while still wearing their prosthetics.

The first season of Netflix’s reboot of Sexy Beasts is out now and consists of six episodes.
It’s been reported that there will be a second season, which is expected to come out later this year.
