Teofimo Lopez Not Willing to Wait Till October 2021 to Fight George Kambosos Jr.

The much-awaited Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos Jr. lightweight title bout is facing huge roadblocks. Earlier, this contest was set to take place on June 5, but it later got postponed to June 19. However, the champ Lopez tested positive for Covid-19 and this bout again got postponed to August 14.

Now, the organizer of this fight, Triller, wants to push this fight to October 14th and hold it in Kambosos’s home country Australia. But, ‘The Takeover’ and his team are not keen on the location or the postponement.

That said, Lopez hired Patrick English to draft a letter to the IBF, addressing this entire scenario. As per Boxing Scene, English wrote, “We are in receipt of a request to allow postponement of the bout resulting from a purse [bid] held on February 25, 2021.”

“The request is to permit a postponement until October 14, 2021. We strongly object on behalf of Mr. Lopez to the request, which not only violates the IBF rules but which is impractical.”

Patrick English highlighted every major point in this letter on behalf of Lopez. The entire team of Teofimo Lopez is in sync and they just do not wish to fight Down Under or wait for longer than necessary.

Kambosos Jr. is Lopez‘s IBF mandatory opponent. And because of the prevailing scenario, the fans might get to see Lopez dropping his IBF belt if things get out of hand. That said, as ‘The Takeover’ is in a vulnerable spot now, he’d be keen to hear the response from IBF officials.

What should Teofimo Lopez do if he doesn’t get to face George Kambosos Jr.?

Lopez has an unfinished rivalry with the stout Vasyl Lomachenko. The duo fought in 2020 and since then, the Ukrainian boxer has shown keen interest in a rematch with the American boxer.

Lomachenko wants to avenge his loss and reclaim his belts against Lopez. That said, if the latter’s fight with Kambosos Jr. falls apart, he still has a viable option of battling ‘Loma’.

Also, this rematch is something that is high on the wishlist of fans and fighters alike. Hence, it’ll be interesting to see if this matchup comes to fruition if the Kambosos Jr bout falls through.
