Denis Shapovalov was stunned by Vit Kopriva at ATP Gstaad

In his maiden ATP tour debut, Kopriva stunned the Canadian with his natural shot-making as he didn’t allow Shapovalov to take control of the match.

Shapovalov, who skipped Tokyo Olympics to play a couple of ATP tournaments to gain a few ranking points was met with disappointment as Kopriva got the better off him right throughout the match.

Despite winning the first-set comfortably, Shapovalov’s serve troubles began right from the second-set onwards. The Canadian made a total of ten double-faults throughout the match in comparison to Kopriva’s four.

Also, Shapovalov couldn’t win more points on the second-serve as his opponent took complete advantage of the Canadian’s lack of serve accuracy and turned the match in his favor.

The Wimbledon semi-finalist lost the second set 6-3, thanks to some fine clay-court tennis from Kopriva. Even in the final set, the Canadian failed to show any impact as he looked completely down and lost the match eventually 6-2,3-6,2-6.

The Czech youngster was elated post-victory as his ATP debut turned out to be a victorious one. Kopriva moved to the quarter-finals at Gstaad, where he faces Mikael Ymer.

With an early exit from the Swiss Open in Gstaad, Shapovalov will now prepare for the US hard-court season which begins with the Citi Open from the 2nd of August.

Shapovalov might take up a wild-card for the upcoming Atlanta Open

Even though there was an ATP-250 event at Atlanta that starts in a few days, it remains to be seen whether the Canadian would be accepting a wild-card entry there. The Atlanta Open features the likes of Jannik Sinner, Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov, and John Isner.

Known for his fierce attacking style of tennis, Denis Shapovalov showed tennis world that he can win grand slams when he took the spotlight in 2017 after defeating Rafael Nadal in Montreal(Canadian Open).

However, things didn’t turn out well for the Canadian as he struggled to maintain consistency at the high level in his initial years. But, a quarter-final run at the US Open last year pushed him towards success this year as evident from his performance at SW19.
