“For This Shirt, I Quartered Myself”: Fabio Fognini Unhappy With Matteo Berrettini’s Decision to Skip Tokyo Olympics 2020

World No.8 Matteo Berrettini registered his best Grand Slam performance at the Wimbledon Championships 2021 as he reached the finals of the tournament. Even though World No.1 Novak Djokovic defeated him in four sets to clinch the title, the Italian was able to win the hearts of his fans.

After the Wimbledon Championships 2021, Matteo Berrettini was supposed to play at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Interestingly, he was to play doubles with Fabio Fognini there but he withdrew from the tournament because of an injury. This made Fognini upset as according to many reports, he never got a call from him but rather got to know this from the newspaper. Before him, even Jannik Sinner withdrew from the biggest sporting event.

In a recent interview, Fognini seemed quite unhappy with the decision of Sinner and Berrettini. He revealed that the Olympic Games are a tournament that he’ll never leave.

“Sinner also made a choice that I do not agree with. But for this shirt, I quartered myself,” said Fognini in the interview.

It will not be wrong to assume that Fognini is a little bit angry as well. He also stated that because of Berrettini, he will not be able to play in the doubles category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

“I would rather not comment on that. I cannot play doubles because of his withdrawal and I am still waiting for his call,” added the Italian player.

After having a decent hard-court season, Berrettini has delivered some quite remarkable performances on the clay and grass court. He won the Serbian Open 2021 and was the runner-up of the Mutua Madrid Open 2021. He even managed to reach the quarters of the French Open 2021 but lost to Novak Djokovic there.

The Italian continued his dream run and played some incredible tennis even on grass. He won the Queen’s Club Championships 2021 and then ended up as the runner-up of the Wimbledon Championships 2021.

It’ll be intriguing to see when Matteo Berrettini makes a return to the court. Fans have huge expectations from him and want him to continue from where he left. Will he succeed at the US Open 2021?
