Mark Tibbs Breaks Ties With Billy Joe Saunders Following Loss to Canelo Alvarez

On May 8, Billy Joe Saunders took up the sternest battle of his career against the p4p king, Canelo Alvarez. This was a gigantic title unification fight that had the attention of the entire world. The Brit undoubtedly was the underdog in this fight, yet he had a huge chunk of fans cheering up for him.

But when the actual fight took place, it was all about the Mexican boxing star crucifying Saunders. In this fight, the former put a dent on ‘Superb’s undefeated boxing stint and gave him some serious eye injuries. Moreover, looking at his injuries and overall performance, Saunders contemplated retirement.

Now, it is also reported that Saunders’ head trainer, Mark Tibbs, might have concluded his relationship with the former champ. Speaking to PepTalk UK, he said, “I wish Billy Joe and his family all the best.” (h/t Michael Benson)

Mark Tibbs has indicated that he’s now split from Billy Joe Saunders. Tibbs said he hasn’t spoken directly to BJS, but just answered “no” when asked whether he thinks he’ll be training him if he fights again. He added: “I wish Billy Joe and his family all the best.” [@PepTalk_UK]

Saunders walked in with full confidence for his fight against Alvarez. In fact, he even was the oppressor in the initial rounds of this contest. But the Mexican boxer changed the course of the fight in the later rounds and he began his assault on Saunders.

As Canelo took the aggressive approach, Saunders went on the back foot and he never really came into the fight. Also, it was in round 8 when Saul Alvarez struck the Brit with a massive shot which caused the eye injury. Looking at the severity of the same, his team decided to end the bout.

Should Billy Joe Saunders return to the professional circuit of boxing again?

Prior to facing Canelo, Saunders had one of the most prolific runs in the super-middleweight division. However, as this one fight didn’t go in his favor, ‘Superb’ decided to take some time before making his next move.

He still showed heart in his fight against Canelo and gave the Mexican boxer an excellent test. That said, he still has a lot left in the bag. Hence, if he comes back, Saunders can look to claim a few wins and eventually regain his titles.
