WWE has announced its first ever New Year’s Day pay-per-view to kick off 2022 in style.
During the company’s unique SmackDown appearance at Rolling Loud festival on Friday night, Atlanta Hawks All-Star Point Guard Trae Young confirmed the Saturday night show will go down on January 1 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
He said: ‘I don’t know about you but I think New Year’s Trae would be a great name for the event, and I can’t think of a better way to bring in 2022 than with the WWE Universe.’
There are no further details on a name for the special show, but WWE confirmed it will air on Peacock in the US and the WWE Network everywhere else just weeks before the Royal Rumble.
‘State Farm Arena is a phenomenal venue with a long history of hosting world-class events,’ added Scott Zanghellini, WWE Senior Vice President, Revenue Strategy & Development.
‘We’re excited to deliver this pay-per-view to the people of Atlanta and the many that travel to the city to celebrate New Year’s.’
Tickets are set to go on sale Friday, August 17 at Ticketmaster.com, and while it’s far too soon to speculate on matches for the event, the company did announce some talent.
The early poster features Universal Champion Roman Reigns, WWE Champion Bobby Lashley, SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair and new Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H..
Also teased for the show are Intercontinental Champ Apollo Crews and the United States Champ Sheamus, as well as the red and blue brand’s respective tag team titleholders AJ Styles & Omos, and The Usos.
Finally, WWE also said Natalya and Tamina – the current Women’s Tag Team Champions – will be there alongside Drew McIntyre, Charlotte Flair, Randy Orton, Riddle, Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss and Sasha Banks.
The company teased ‘many more’ stars to be announced, and the picture will obviously become clearer over the coming months.
*WWE’s first ever New Year’s Day pay-per-view is coming to the WWE Network on January 1.
