Warning: spoilers ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 episode 6.

Since season 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale, fans have been wondering when – or if – June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and her husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) would ever be reunited after they were cruelly torn apart and separated from their daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake).

Finally, after years of separation and uncertainty, June and Luke come face to face in season 4 episode 6 after Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) helps her best friend June escape from war-torn Chicago to take refuge in Canada after all the trauma she has suffered in Gilead.

Fans were sobbing as they watched the couple set eyes on each other after previously being unsure if they would ever see each other again.

What made the moment even more poignant was June’s profuse apology to Luke that she couldn’t bring their daughter Hannah with her, having been unable to rescue her from her adopted family, the MacKenzies.

As Luke rushes onto the boat which transported June from Chicago, he hurries into the cabin where she is waiting for him, an expression of relief dawning on his face as he processes the fact that June actually made it out.

Without saying a word, the couple exchange meaningful glances, with Luke realising that something isn’t right before June expresses the guilt she feels over not bringing Hannah with her.

Luke and June share a tight embrace, as June sobs in her husband’s arms.

Viewers were overwhelmed with emotion by the heart-wrenching reunion, which some may have thought would never transpire on The Handmaid’s Tale.

‘Anyone else in tears?’ one person tweeted at the end of the episode.

‘At last!! That was so tense, I’m wrecked…’ someone else wrote.

Another outstanding episode. Rollercoaster of emotions, panic, fear, tension, love, failure, pathos. I feel the Resistance back in Chicago will come to the rescue #TheHandmaidsTale

‘Trying to imagine how I’d feel if that was me. A mother’s love is so strong,’ another remarked over June’s guilt over Hannah.

Meanwhile, someone else asked whether ‘there will ever be an episode of #TheHandmaidsTale that doesn’t make me an absolute WRECK OF EMOTIONS’.

When Moira finds June in Chicago, she immediately sets about helping her escape the battleground and make her way to Canada, but her girlfriend Oona (Zawe Ashton), an aid worker in charge of the field mission, forbids her from doing so.

Moira decides to go ahead anyway behind Oona’s back, smuggling June onto the vehicle before the entire crew finds out.

Oona is torn over what to do, as there’s a possibility that June could be discovered when Gilead forces inspect the boat.

However, June somehow manages to make it past the inspection, reuniting with Luke on the boat when it docks in Canada before stepping foot on shore.

Now that June has landed in the same country where Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) are being kept captive, when will she cross paths with the couple who made her life a living hell?

Whether she’s in Gilead or Canada, June’s mission for revenge is far from over.

The Handmaid’s Tale returns next Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
