‘The Take Downs Didn’t Do Sh*t’- Cody Garbrandt Shares His Take on T.J. Dillashaw’s Split Decision Win Over Cory Sandhagen

Former UFC bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw made a triumphant return to the UFC Octagon this weekend as he managed to earn a decision win against no. 2 ranked Cory Sandhagen. Another former champion of the division and Dillashaw’s former foe, Cody Garbrandt was not so happy with the decision.

It was a back-and-forth contest with both Sandhagen and Dillashaw having their moments. Sandhagen outclassed Dillashaw on the feet. However, the former champion had good control time in the clinch and managed to stack ‘Sandman’ against the cage. That might have played a role in the split decision going in his favor.

“Legit thought Cory did way more damage the take downs didn’t do shit with them and controlling him against the cage wasn’t a deciding factor, Cory looked cleaner and did more damage. Feel for Cory that was his fight,” wrote Garbrandt on Twitter when asked to share his thoughts on the decision.

It was a razor-close fight and both fighters can make arguments that they won the fight. While Sandhagen busted Dillashaw open with his sniper instinct shots, Dillashaw relied heavily on the grappling to neutralize the heat coming from his opponent’s way. Nevertheless, fans certainly enjoyed the highly technical contest.

T.J. Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt 3: a fight for the near future?

The two former teammates have already fought twice with Dillashaw earning a knockout win on both occasions. However, there are claims that ‘No Love’ would have won the first fight had he gotten a bit more time in the first round of their first fight. He managed to drop Dillashaw heavily at UFC 217.

Garbrandt, despite his recent skid, is still one of the top contenders of the 135 lbs division of the UFC. So, if Dillashaw decides to fight again rather than waiting for a title shot, maybe this is the match-up to make. Fans love to see the two throw down as there is a heated build-up expected. Also, Garbrandt has already called for a third contest.

Whether the UFC matches the duo up again, remains to be seen.
