A brand new trailer for Dexter season nine has been revealed, and it looks like Michael C Hall’s serial killer is slipping back into his old ways after years away from our screens.

The clip shows titular character Dexter Morgan struggle to face up to demons from his past and keep his real identity hidden, offering the biggest taste of what’s to come in the upcoming episodes so far.

Dexter has assumed a new identity for the reboot, titled Dexter: New Blood, after he faked his death in the divisive season eight finale.

The elusive serial killer now goes by the name Jim Lindsay, and is a sales associate at Fred’s Fish & Game.

The clip begins with Dexter in therapy, addressing his demons and struggling learning to live with his new identity – and to avoid reawakening his notorious bloodlust.

The new lease of life for Dexter had been announced last October, with original network Showtime behind the reboot. Hall is returning to play Dexter, aka the Bay Harbour Butcher, in the 10 episode limited series.

Clyde Phillips, who was showrunner for the first four seasons of Dexter, is returning as showrunner for the limited series, while Clancy Brown, David Magidoff, Oscar Wahlberg and Jamie Chung have joined the cast.

Lead star Michael had also revealed that he hopes the new season will make up for the ‘unsatisfying’ finale.

The last thing fans saw in season eight was Dexter sailing off into a hurricane in his boat Slice Of Life. Dexter was presumed dead when the ship was found wrecked, even by his fellow killer Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) who is now in Argentina with Dex’s son Harrison.

However, it turned out Dexter faked his own death and was hiding out in Oregon, working for a lumber company.

Speaking about the decision to revive the show, actor Michael said: ‘It’s a conversation that’s been ongoing, and different possibilities have emerged over the years.

‘I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before.’

Discussing the ending to season eight in 2013, he added to The Daily Beast: ‘And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling.’

While Dexter: New Blood is expected to arrive on Showtime in the US in Autumn 2021. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
