From that tutu to the bandana: Carrie Bradshaw’s most divisive trends we hope to see in Sex and The City reboot And Just Like That

Sex and The City’s Carrie Bradshaw remains a fashion icon (Picture: HBO/Getty)

Carrie Bradshaw will forever remain a fashion icon, and while the Sex and The City reboot And Just Like That is currently filming, we wanted to pay homage to some of Carrie’s most wild and wonderful outfits.

Sarah Jessica Parker (who, of course, plays Carrie) has been spotted looking every inch the fashionista on the set, and it has made us think about the trademark Carrie trends we want to see return.

When Sex and The City first hit our TV screens in 1998, shockwaves were sent through friendship groups as they dissected and replicated her incredible looks.

Carrie was the epitome of fashionably brave, never hesitant to walk the streets of New York in an outlandish ensemble.

While the columnist’s outfits didn’t always hit the nail on the head, for years they have encouraged audiences to experiment with what they wear.

Here we have detailed some of our favourite looks, which we hope make a comeback in the reboot (even if slightly modernised).

The iconic tutu

One of her most memorable and fabulous outfits is of course that tutu.

The tiered tutu was paired with a pale-pink tank top, strappy heels and gorgeous curls for the show’s opening credits, and it set the tone for the outfits that were to follow.

Costume designer Patricia Field disclosed several years ago that she found the tutu for $5 from a showroom bin.

While Sarah was immediately on board with the wildcard outfit, Patricia stated in 2012 the show’s creator, Darren Star, needed a little more convincing.

Good job Darren was convinced, as the original look has become synonymous with the show.

When SATC came to an end after six seasons, Patricia left an indelible mark on the finale with a look we’ll never forget. During the show’s last ever sequence she paid tribute to the tutu in the credits with a more mature tulle skirt, which helped to portray a more grown-up Carrie.

We would love to see another tulle skirt, this time representing a 50-something-year-old Carrie.

The Dior newspaper dress

Carrie wore this dress not once, but twice (Picture: WireImage)

Carrie’s famed Dior slip dress, which was covered in newspaper print, is legendary. Proving that this outfit has stood the test of time, this dress is still spoken about today and designers have made their own versions of the iconic piece.

She wore the John Galliano number in season three when she bumped into Natasha at a restaurant and later had her Manolo Blahnicks stolen. The dress was so iconic Carrie actually wore it twice during SATC’s run, again in the franchise’s second movie.

Sadly the Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc pointed out that John Galliano lifted the idea from a 1935 Elsa Schiaparelli print comprised of her own press clippings and he was also distastefully inspired by homelessness.

While the creation of the dress leaves a lot to be desired, we would love to see a nod to this lauded garment in the reboot. You can call us greedy, but we want to see the dress again.

The divisive newsboy cap

Before you judge us too harshly, let us present our case.

Carrie’s best looks are the ones you can’t to imagine anyone else wearing, much less looking stylish in.

While the thought of newsboy caps often conjures up images of Peaky Blinders or your grandfather having Sunday lunch at the pub, Carrie makes it look so chic.

Who would have known that patterned slingbacks and a flat cap could look so good together? She also wore it with a knit romper with a trompe l’oeil effect and the baguette and flowers make the perfect accessory.

We would love to see this somehow incorporated into one of Carrie’s outfits in And Just Like That, it would definitely spark a fashion-debate.

Another hat (this time of the cowboy variety)

How could we not include this incredible look (Picture: HBO)

What can we say? The girl loves a hat.

While most people associate the Hamptons with manicured gardens, immaculate white homes, and turquoise swimming pools, the millionaires’ holiday location inspired Carrie to dress like she was living in the Wild West.

Carrie met Mr Big and his 20-something girlfriend Natasha in season two, episode 17, while dressed in a python-print boob tube, sarong, cowboy hat, and her famed Carrie necklace. And boy, did she look fabulous.

The outfit is the perfect amount of quirky, fun and fashionable.

Cowboy boots are currently back in style, so seeing a cowboy hat appear in the reboot isn’t too wild of an expectation.

The naked dress

This dress was incredibly stylish in the 90s (Picture: HBO)

The slip dress was first worn by Sarah at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards in 1997 and it was thought to be so fantastic, it reemerged on Sex and the City in two crucial scenes.

Carrie wore it during a photoshoot to promote her newspaper column and then she also wore it for her first date with Big.

The skimpy DKNY slip was quickly dubbed the ‘naked dress’ and was considered incredibly stylish in the 90s. Now, because of the enduring popularity of ‘90s fashion, you can buy a replica of this outfit at almost any fast-fashion retailer.

This dress will always be iconic in our eyes, no matter how often people try to recreate it.

We would love to see this outfit taken up a level in the reboot so that it stands out from the crowd and is given a 2021 twist.

The beautiful floral midi

One word: stunning (Picture: HBO)

This gorgeous floral midi dress from Richard Tyler’s Resort 2001 collection has stood the test of time, and we would love to have it in our own wardrobes.

Carrie’s outfits weren’t always wild and wacky, and this dress is the perfect example of how something so simple can be oh so right.

Fans of the show may already know this, but two versions of this dress were sourced for season three episode 18. This is because Carrie found herself taking a surprise dip in Central Park’s boating pond with Big.

One of the dresses was sold for charity in 2001 and the other was eventually donated to Australia’s Museums Victoria.

Floral dresses can really be hit or miss, but we would love to see another version of this soft pink dress in the new series.

Fur coat after fur coat

SATC wouldn’t be complete without a fur coat, as they were a hallmark throughout the TV series.

Who can forget that iconic scene where Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte turn up to the baseball game looking luxurious in their fur coats in the episode Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Carrie wore a fur coat throughout the franchise but a particular outfit that comes to mind is when she wore one on New Year’s Eve.

Even though she wore her pyjamas underneath, she of course had to accessorise, opting for white stiletto boots, stylish gloves and a single strand of pearls.

Carrie just wouldn’t be Carrie without a fur coat (let’s just please make sure it’s faux).

The boyfriend shirt

Carrie used her ex’s wardrobe as fashion inspo (Picture: HBO)

Following the impromptu swim in Central Park’s boating pond in season three episode 18, Carrie made the best of a bad situation when she turned to Mr Big’s wardrobe for an outfit.

In true Carrie fashion, she managed to put together a chic ensemble with an oversized shirt, a belt and high heels.

This is a look we have seen on the runway over the years and we would love to see a modern twist on the look.

A 90s bandana or headscarf

Bandanas are back in fashion (Picture: HBO)

We all know by now that Carrie wasn’t afraid to complete a look with headpieces, as over the six seasons and two films she wore everything from Newsboy caps and fedoras to space buns and cowboy hats.

She most regularly returned to the bandana or headscarf, and we particularly love the 90s vibe of the one pictured, especially when paired with those purple sunnies.

More: Sarah Jessica Parker

Take one scroll through your Instagram feed and you’ll find that bandanas are well and truly back in fashion. This could mean that we see Carrie wearing the chic accessory in the reboot (at least we hope so).

And Just Like That will be available to stream on HBO Max. Sex and The City is available to stream on NOW TV.
