‘if It’s Damage, I Win’- Cory Sandhagen Opens up on His Controversial Decision Loss to TJ Dillashaw

Cory Sandhagen faced off against former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in an epic blood and guts main event at UFC Vegas 32. The event had garnered a lot of hype given it was a fight amongst two of the very best at 135-pounds. It is safe to say that the fight lived up to all the hype and much more as the two men went toe-to-toe over five rounds.

Following a razor-thin split decision loss against Dillashaw, Sandhagen shared his thoughts on Instagram about what he made of the fight. He said, “My thoughts on the fight, as I’m sure some of you are curious: I believe I should have done more to win. I made a few mistakes that gave him a nod from the judges.”

‘Sandman’ continued, “I kept myself protected and defended almost all the shots while scoring the harder and cleaner ones. He was able to control against cage for longer, while not doing any damage.. up to you if you score that as winning. I will give credit to TJ for fighting tough. It was a coin toss. If it’s damage, I win. If it’s control, he wins. So it goes.. thanks for the support from everyone.. gonna keep climbing”

Cory Sandhagen falls short in a title eliminator once again 

‘Sandman’ is a tremendous fighter and is without a doubt, one of the very best at 135-pounds. However, this is the second time thus far in his UFC career that he has failed to win a title eliminator. The last time he found himself in the same situation, he lost a fight against Aljamain Sterling who went on to fight for the belt in the very next fight.

The common consensus going into this fight was that the winner would challenge for the title against the winner of Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling. The fight against Dillashaw was too close to call. It could have gone either way. Unfortunately for Sandhagen, the decision did not go his way. In the post-fight interviews, he stated that he would be back and is still only a win away from a title shot.
