“Never Throwing in the Towel”: Danielle Collins Proud of Herself After Winning Maiden Title at WTA Palermo Open 2021
Very few players in tennis will get through their careers without frequently getting injured. Injuries not just cause pain but disrupt a player’s momentum on their respective tours. One such athlete who is consistently battling physical ailments and continues to play at the highest level on the WTA tour is Danielle Collins.

Having announced her struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2019, the American recently talked about her battle with endometriosis. Collins underwent surgery a couple of months ago in order to make comeback at the French Open.
Despite losing to Serena Williams in the third-round, Collins didn’t struggle to move during her stint at Roland Garros. Since then, the American continued her participation in several tournaments and won her first-ever WTA title at Palermo on Sunday.

Danielle Collins won her first tour-level title at WTA Palermo
Collins traveled alone to all the tournaments, made friends with locals, who cheered for her right throughout. Even in Palermo, the American went the same way and got herself a well-deserved title.
The 2019 Australian Open semi-finalist defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final 6-4,6-2, to clinch the maiden title. In her career so far, Collins defeated the likes of Elina Svitolina, Garbine Muguruza, Sofia Kenin, etc., amongst other top pla yers.
Celebrating her first WTA title, the American posted a series of photos on Instagram to express her gratitude for the friends who supported her in Palermo.
“This week has been so rewarding to win my first WTA title. To do it on my own after traveling by myself with no family, friends, coach, etc…for the last month has had its ups and downs”, wrote the American.

Collins remains optimistic over her performance in the upcoming tournaments as she announced her participation in the WTA Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose.
“I’m really proud of myself for giving it my best everyday, and never throwing in the towel. The love and encouragement that I receive from my family and friends has helped me tremendously”, Collins mentioned in her long post.

Despite innumerable struggles, Collins powered her way through some tough opponents like Astra Sharma and Shuai Zhang to claim her maiden WTA title. If the American can continue the same form in the upcoming US hard-court season, she can topple some big names on the WTA tour.
